Along with the Sports Mark, Healthy School Status and Basic Skills Quality Award we have also reached silver level for the Eco Schools award. We are now aiming to achieve the Green Flag award which reflects many current Government strategies such as Sustainable Schools, Extended Schools and Every Child Matters
Eco Team - We have set up an Eco team made up of Pupils, Staff, Governors and Parents and now plan to conduct an environmental review of the school and its facilities to assess where we can make further important changes.
Biodiversity - Our school grounds are an ideal place to get our pupils involved with the natural environment and as part of our Green Flag ambition we are aiming to make our gardens more attractive to wildlife.
Birds - We endeavour to attract a variety of wild birds to our school garden and have introduced a daily rota amongst older pupils for replenishing bird feed and water.
Bird Box - Tesco vouchers donated by parents last year have enabled us to purchase a Camera nest box suitable for nesting blue tits, which captures high quality black and white moving images and sound on a small TV within Rockets class. Fingers crossed that Blue Tits nest this spring!
Gardening Club - Our Gardening Club offers pupils of all ages the opportunity to help grow a variety of fruits and vegetables which are later cooked and sampled in school. This year we also hope to grow wild flowers,
Litter Pick- As part of our Eco Schools initiative we undertook a litter pick on 30th March. This took place on Milleneum Green, Church Yard and was a huge success with around 10 large bags of litter collected. Headteacher Mrs Taylor could be heard on Radio Suffolk on the morning of 30th explaining what the pupils intended to do and why it is so important.
Eco Day - We aim to encourage our pupils to think about subjects such as recycling and re-using materials. On the afternoon of Friday 26th February Pupils dedicated their time to making paper from old newspapers and egg boxes as well as learning about Fairtrade products and recycling,
Current recycling initiatives:- Recycling of mobile phones and ink cartridges Introduction of a bottle bank and paper bank. Composting of fruit peelings.
