Monks Eleigh School Community Hall

UPDATE ...... STOP PRESS...

We are very pleased to announce that our target for the funding for the Community Hall has had a real boost recently, with a promise of a grant of £25,000 from Babergh District Council, and that of £165,000 from the Local Education Authority
The packages for tender have been prepared, and it looks possible that work may start in the Spring of 2011.

M onks Eleigh School Community Hall    [MESCH]

M onks Eleigh School Community Hall [MESCH] is a Registered Charity (Charity No. 1126802), and a registered Company Limited by Guarantee (No. 6037503)

The formation of MESCH came into being by necessity, as the existing Village Hall has concrete cancer and is under threat of demolition.

The historic village of Monks Eleigh has a thriving and active community of some 420 residents, and the existing Village Hall serves as a focal point of the village. It provides a venue for Parish Council and Church meetings, as well as for other community groups such as the youth Club, Over 60s Club, Gardening Club, History Group and Carpet Bowls.   The Primary School uses the Hall on a regular basis, and many of the school's physical education activities take place in the hall, especially during the winter months.

As the school in Monks Eleigh does not have a hall, it was decided to build a Community Hall that will benefit everyone. The new hall will be built in the grounds of the school, which is close to the existing hall, and where there will be good access and car-parking facilities.

The objects of MESCH, as stated in the Charity Classification, are:-

1.    To promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of Monks Eleigh and the surrounding area the provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances, or for the public at large in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the condition of life of the said inhabitants.

2.   To advance the education of pupils at the Monks Eleigh CEVC Primary School in particular but not exclusively by the provision of a hall.

The 'surrounding area' consists of four neighbouring villages (Brent Eleigh, Chelsworth, Milden and Kettlebaston that, between them, have a total population of less than 400.

Planning permission for the new Community Hall was granted by Suffolk County Council in February 2010, and that of the development of the site of the existing hall by Babergh District Council in June 2010. All the money from the sale of the land must be used for the building of the new Community Hall.

Please visit this page regularly and we will try to keep you up to date on the latest developments regarding the project.
